Live ice hockey made a return to Sky Sports this week as Televideo produced the Elite Ice Hockey League Playoff Final live on Sky Sports 2. Televideo have now produced the show for 3 seasons, but the Playoff Final marked the first live British Ice Hockey event on Sky Sports in recent years.

A very busy Easter weekend saw the company’s outside broadcast units and crew working across the UK – with Scottish Premier League football on Saturday 3rd and the first round of British Superbikes in Brands Hatch on Easter Sunday and Monday, as well as the BBC Super League Show production to contend with – Televideo’s newest but most compact outside broadcast unit, HD2 was put to the test once again and was used for the Ice Hockey Final at the Trent FM Arena in Nottingham.  This seemingly small truck has a surprisingly high capacity, and HD2 proved it is the perfect truck for a big job in need of a small footprint. Televideo’s VT1 was used in conjunction with HD2 to allow for additional production and VT crew to operate in close proximity to the main production area.

The programme was presented by Nick Rothwell, who was joined in the studio by two familiar faces from the EIHL - Sheffield Steelers Coach David Matsos and Edinburgh Capitals Coach Doug Christiansen.  Dave Simms and Rick Strachan were in fine form in the commentary booth, and were as comedic and enthusiastic as ever. Sky Sports’ Neil Chiplen joined the team as rinkside reporter, and together the talent team guided viewers through 3 hours of thrilling ice hockey entertainment.

Programme Producer James Mitchell said after the show: “It was great – we’ve wanted to do the ice hockey live for a long time and I think it worked very well. All week we’ve had fingers crossed that it wouldn’t go to extra time and penalties, but as is the way when you’re live – it did! The talent team and the crew did a brilliant job today – I hope the viewers enjoyed it at home, and what a great way to end the season!”
