This year’s Radio 1Xtra Live event wowed fans at the NIA in Birmingham on Saturday night, with a star-studded line up ending with an incredible performance from Mary J Blige. A sold out crowd of 10,000 were on their feet throughout the 4-hour show, and for viewers at home, all the action was live on the BBC Red Button.

Televideo’s HD8 was the production hub for the broadcast, which was presented by 1Xtra DJs Charlie Sloth and Yasmin Evans. The majority of the backstage action came from the SlothPod, a Boeing 737 fuselage, frequently used in blockbuster films, which was custom designed for Charlie Sloth – a definite step up from the Slothpod buggy of 2013!

The presenters had 3 dedicated cameras for links and interviews around the NIA, and the remaining 9 cameras covered the stage show in all its glory. A 50ft super technocrane and a 24ft jimmy jib offered sweeping shots of the performers amidst the impressive light show, whilst 2 RF steadicams on multiple site diversity receivers allowed the viewer to get up close with the artists on stage. A number of tracking cameras and long lenses completed the camera specification.

The OB also included VizRT graphics, which were adapted in-house using the BBC Radio 1Xtra graphics style, and in the VT department various packages were played in throughout the production to give the TV audience a behind-the-scenes glimpse of life at Radio 1Xtra.
